Winning the Digital Innovation Challenge 2021

The Digital Innovation Challenge 2021 was a 24-hour hackathon on the topic “responsible computing” as part of INFORMATIK2021. Together with three other peers, we developed a browser extension “ByeBuy” that helps consumers to be more conscious about their purchases during online shopping. To get a demo of our solution watch this video or install our extensions for yourself (link to firefox extension).

In the end, we won the first prize and received 1500€. You can read more about it in this article on the HPI website.

Here are my key takeaways of this Hackathon:

  • Browser extensions are a nice way of prototyping ideas
  • You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to win a hackathon. A small improvement to a big problem and a solid technical implementation is impressive as well
